Securing and Optimizing the Handling of Radioelements in the Energy Sector
 

Context

Our customer is an energy company specializing in the handling and packaging of radioelements for hospitals. These radioelements are essential for medical examinations such as positron emission tomography (PET scan). Handling them involves major challenges in terms of worker safety, requiring strict protocols and adapted facilities.

 

Challenges

One of our customer's main challenges is to ensure the safety of operators exposed to potentially highly active radioactive sources. To achieve this, several measures are in place, including the use of glove boxes for the safe handling of radioelements, the wearing of personal dosimeters to monitor worker exposure, and the installation of probes in handling and storage rooms to detect and alert when safety thresholds are exceeded.

The customer's objective is to validate its installation by ensuring the correct positioning of probes, the choice of materials and the thickness of glove boxes, as well as the conformity of the dose rate received by operators with safety standards. Optimization of the warning system is also called for, to improve the responsiveness and effectiveness of preventive measures.​

Requirements

The customer is looking for validation of its infrastructure to ensure that installations comply with safety standards. In particular, it expects :

 

  • Confirmation of correct probe positioning,
     

  • Assessment of glove box materials and thicknesses,
     

  • Validation that the dose rate received by operators complies with standards,
     

  • Optimization of the warning system, in particular by identifying the best positions for the probes to optimize their effectiveness.

Solutions provided

SMARTIUM has implemented an approach based on customized Monte-Carlo simulations, enabling :
 

  • Calculate equivalent dose rates and compare them with measurements supplied by the customer,
     

  • Model different configurations of infrastructures, radioelements and equipment placements (personnel, probes, sources).
     

  • Propose dose maps to identify critical areas and optimize probe positioning,
     

  • improve detection by finding optimal positions to maximize the signal perceived by probes, and thus guarantee effective warning in the event of danger.​​
     

Results 

The solution developed by SMARTIUM enabled the customer to : 

  • Validation

Confirm the conformity of installations and the safety of operators with an estimate of equivalent dose rates, with an uncertainty of only a few percent,

  • Optimization

Optimize probe positioning, tripling the signal received compared with the initial positions,

  • Reinforcement

Reinforce the warning system by increasing the responsiveness and accuracy of radiation measurements.​
